It was a warm sunny/very wet day in May. Hamish and Dougal were sitting on a bench in the picturesque East Lothian town of Musselburgh, partaking of some of the delicious ice cream for which the town is justly famous. Suddenly the earth began to shake and the air filled with the sound of loud puffing. "Jings!" exclaimed Dougal. "Is it an earthquake?" "Even more unexpected than that," said Hamish. "It's that Adrienne Murray doing the Edinburgh Marathon again. "Well b***** me," said Dougal, "that is more surprising," and he dropped his strawberry cone in shock.
Yes for the fourth time I have entered the Edinburgh Marathon, but this time it's personal, this time I'm doing it for sponsorship in memory of my mother, who was born and raised in Musselburgh, the town in which the marathon finishes. She was brave and beautiful and clever and witty and when she was 48 she died of breast cancer, leaving behind a husband and 14 year old twin daughters. On 7th September 2007 I passed the age at which she died. Every day I live now is a day she never had.
