 Thanks for visiting my site. If you don’t know me, let me tell you a little bit about me. My name is Helder Daude – I’m 37 and originally from Lisbon in Portugal but have been living and working in the UK for the best part of 13 years. I see the UK as my home now, which I share with my English wife (to be!) and our two lovely sons Luca, 3 and Leo, 8 months.

While it has always been an ambition of mine to run the London Marathon, it is only in the last year that I have had a true incentive to run and raise money for Cancer Research UK. This time last year I was told that my dad had been diagnosed with colon cancer. Of course I wanted to be by his side, to help him in some way. But realistically, what could I do? My fiancé was pregnant with Leo and Dad being Dad told me not to fly out to see him, reassuring me that a course of chemotherapy would see him right. It was a worrying time when I did see him months later I was shocked. He looked gaunt and frail and the drugs had made the palms of his hands and soles of his feet so hyper-sensitive he couldn’t bear to hold a metal fork, nor let his feet touch the ground. He’d lost all sense of taste and soup was the only food he had the energy to digest. Dad, a former Commando in the army, had always been so strong and fit, but I had to accept that the drugs that were doing this to him, were also probably saving his life.

Three months later dad met Leo in person, something in my darkest moments I doubted would ever happen – amazingly he even found the strength to throw him in the air like he had done with his other five grandchildren. Five months after that and he is already back at work, the doctor’s confident that he is on his way to a full recovery. It has been a miracle to see and all the incentive I needed to commit myself to running the London Marathon this year and raise money for those researching cancer. They may have saved dad’s life, and whose life will be next? It’s for this reason that I hope you may be able to help contribute a little something to a very worthwhile fight….
